What moment will define your life? A little while ago while driving in my car, I switched on the radio and was shocked to hear a national radio broadcaster slamming me with all kinds of accusations, misinformation and lies. I was reluctant to call the radio station to correct the error because I thought it would simply aggravate the situation. All of a sudden something rose up within me. In a torrent of aggression, vision and drive, I yelled out at the top of my voice, 'My failure will not define my life!' Failures have never defined any great person's life. The failures of Babe Ruth did not define his life, his home runs did. The failures of Albert Einstein, Winston Churchill, and Thomas Edison did not define their lives, their successes did. Everyone in life fails. We all miss the mark sometime. But we don't define life by the misses; we define life by the bulls-eyes, by the targets we hit, the slam dunks, the home runs, and the holes putted. There is a story told of two men, Dan Rhodes and Dave Thomas, who met long before Thomas opened up his first Wendys shop. Rhodes admitted he always knew that young Thomas would some day be something big, but he passed up the opportunity to invest in Wendys. Later Rhodes met Colonel Sanders and had a chance to buy his stock before it went public. Rhodes turned down that opportunity too because he didn't agree with some of the Colonel’s ideas. When he was in the restaurant business, Rhodes met a salesman named Ray Crock. Rhodes admits that Crock was a nice guy, but he chose not to invest in his little hamburger joint called McDonalds. A few years later, on an Alaskan cruise, Rhodes met an attorney from Seattle who suggested Rhodes invest in his son’s new computer company. It was called Microsoft; again Rhodes declined the offer. Right now, most of us would be thinking that Rhodes was a fool. But he learned from his mistakes and kept pursuing his dreams. Eventually, Rhodes saw his name on Forbes Magazine’s list of the 400 most successful business owners in America. He didn't let his failures define his life. Challenge Friend, this is a question I want to ask you. What moment will define your life? Will it be your failures at school, your broken relationship, a bankruptcy, a missed opportunity, the loss of a loved one, or an abusive situation? You must not let moments of negativity define your life. You must make those moments your building blocks for a great purpose. Start seeing your failure as an investment in the future. You will most certainly get another chance to build again, only this time make it better than the last time.
